"The list of the best states to live in is well-distributed, emphasizing that buyers can find a great place to live in any region, depending on their priorities," says Hannah Jones, senior economic research analyst at Realtor.com®.
"Utah boasts strong fiscal stability, infrastructure, and a strong economy, while nearby Idaho is stronger in its natural environment and economic opportunity. Depending on what a buyer is looking for, they have ... options within the same region, but with different strengths."
The Best States ranking methodology looked at 71 metrics and thousands of data points to measure how well U.S. states are performing for their residents. It also looked at a state's economic growth, infrastructure, public safety, fiscal stability, and opportunities. More weight was given to some categories based on surveys of what matters most to residents.
Utah was also ranked No. 1 in fiscal stability and third in economy and infrastructure. The state is known for its skiing and the Sundance Film Festival—but the event will be moving to Colorado in 2027.
"Utah offers residents good economic opportunities and stability, which can help households stay put and put down roots," adds Jones.
